The man, whose name was withheld, attacked cops with a medium-sized samurai sword, police said, repeatedly lunging at them and shouting, “Kill me!”
“This situation could have ended a lot differently had it not been for the professionalism and restraint shown by the officers on B-2,” said Boston patrolmen’s union President Thomas Nee.
Police were called to the 26-year-old’s home about 5 p.m. Cops called for backup and tried to kick down the door. As one officer walked outside, the suspect came crashing through a closed third-floor window, bounced off an awning, hit the ground and ran.
Cops chased him until he spun around, sword drawn, near Washington Park. With more than 20 cops, guns drawn, around him, he repeatedly charged, shouting “Shoot me! Kill me!” police said.
Sgt. Thomas Teahan sneaked up and tackled him. The suspect, who was treated for minor injuries, is being held at Bridgewater State Hospital.Matthew Krumhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10738127075510322646noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4518336198145997386.post-77516637961679899442010-01-30T12:28:00.000-08:002010-01-30T12:33:39.500-08:00Google's Eric Schmidt: 'Tell Me The Difference Between A Large Phone And A Tablet'
As I said in my previous post, this device isn't a real contender for geeks/professionals like my self. They brag in videos that "the user doesn't have to change to use this device." That leads me to believe that in holding this device, I would want to do what comes naturally, and for me, touching a button at the bottom doesn't seem natural to me. I see how the location is natural for a mobile phone or music player...but not a tablet.

Maybe I'm just crazy and too l33t, I don't know. One thing I spotted is that it's running the iPhone OS so that may explain our earlier post but I'm not sure how the data was aggregated but it makes sense that the devices would look similar when accessing the internet. I personally am disappointed with the device as I thought it would be something that I would replace my laptop with and run Adobe PS-CS3, Dream Weaver CS4 among just a few applications. Looks like I may as well purchase a high powered touch PC/ Tablet Notebook, throw Ubuntu or Win 7 on it and rock & roll.

At today's big event, Apple delivered all the rah-rah, buzz phrases ("whole new experience" "it just works," isn't it awesome"), and slick industrial design we've come to expect. But at the end of the day, the show's centerpiece - the iPad -- is just a big iPod Touch. Lots of folks will want it, in a hypothetical sort of way. But it's hard to imagine all that many of them will fork over the initial $499 for a crippled version, or as much as $829 (for the 64 GB/3G model you'd want). Then there's the $15 to $30 per month you'd need to add to your existing carrier bill for the privilege of a persistent connection.
The unanswered question is whether we really need a "third device" - something to fill the gap between smartphone and laptop.Steve Jobs pitched that such a machine would need to be better than a laptop or a smartphone at email, photos, videos, music, games, and ebooks to justify its existence. One could argue that the iPad is better at these things only in that it is bigger. There's no fundamental advance here.
Consumers have not shown an overwhelming interest thus far in tablets. The iPad may be the best (and slickest) tablet we've seen. But that's like advertising yourself as the tastiest cod liver oil. Where's the real multitasking that might set this apart? Will developers really rush to develop apps for this if there isn't a groundswell of support among users? Where's the camera?
Here we have a fabulous browser, with a beautiful high-res display, that mostly matches capabilities found in lots of lightweight notebooks. Not to mention a certain phone already owned by millions.
Certainly the Apple faithful will snap this up, despite the pricing. For the iPad to succeed, it has to reach beyond that tight-knit fraternity, as the iPhone did. Best guess: This may not reach much farther than the Apple TV.
Full disclosure: These are first impressions based on Apple's presentation. We'll be following up with more reporting, analysis and hands on experiences once the device becomes available.Matthew Krumhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10738127075510322646noreply@blogger.com18tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4518336198145997386.post-25902802915203428012010-01-25T17:27:00.001-08:002010-01-25T19:55:35.760-08:00Apple ‘Tablets’ Sniffed by Analytics Are More Likely iPhones

Analytics firm Flurry has tracked down 50 devices that it believes are Apple’s expected tablet. The devices’ IPs and GPS data give away they have not left Apple’s Cupertino campus, according to Flurry, which raises the firm’s suspicion that these are prototypes in testing. Flurry goes on to say its app tracking matches the “characteristics of Apple’s rumored tablet device” even though the analytics don’t provide any data about the characteristics of the prototypes.

Flurry concludes the devices being tested are tablets because games, entertainment and book apps are being launched the most, according to analytics tracking, corroborating rumor reports that the tablet will have a strong focus on gaming and e-reading. But those are the types of apps you would expect to be tested the most on any iPhone-related prototype device to gauge performance and display quality. And there are more games in the App Store than any other kind of app. Moreover, Flurry’s data set — 200 apps — is extremely scarce relative to the App Store’s 100,000 offerings.

Flurry’s analytics state the devices are running a newer, unreleased version of the iPhone OS, version 3.2. Current iPhones run OS 3.1.2. That’s where Flurry’s argument falls apart, because a tablet would be unlikely to run the exact same OS as the iPhone. More realistic is a modified version of the iPhone OS that would probably be called something else, such as “iSlate OS.”

Flurry’s blog post then quickly gets lost in rumor territory, reporting claims on screen size and other unsubstantiated nuggets, even though its analytics do not retrieve any data about screen size or resolution.

Flurry tracks mobile applications and offers its customers usage stats and other handy numbers. It also knows what applications are being downloaded, to what device and where. It works like Google analytics: developers add Flurry to their applications and then their usage can be tracked, including geographic location, time spent online and even which mobile carrier they are on. This data is then aggregated so the developer sees just how their software is used.

“[We] identified approximately 50 devices that match the characteristics of Apple’s rumored tablet device,” Flurry said in a blog post. “Because Flurry could reliably ‘place’ these devices geographically on Apple’s Cupertino campus, we have a fair level of confidence that we are observing a group of pre-release tablets in testing.”

So Flurry’s analysis is such: Prototype devices aren’t leaving Apple’s campus, and they’re running iPhone OS 3.2. Out of a sample of 200 apps, they’re launching games, entertainment and e-reader apps the most. Therefore, they are tablets. To believe that conclusion, you’d have to take a few logical leaps of faith. First, you’d have to assume the tablet is running the same OS as the iPhone, and that’s unlikely. Or you could assume the tablet launches the iPhone OS in the background of its own OS, which is why it’d register as iPhone OS. (Good-bye, battery life.) Then you’d have to believe the 200 apps being tested are a strong representative sample of the App Store’s 100,000 wares.

If we were to make an assessment, these sound more like fourth-generation iPhones in testing. But there is no solid assessment to make, based on such a small sample of data that offers zero insight into the device’s hardware.
Do we assume that the tablet can run existing iPhone apps? Or are there, as we have heard, already larger, tweaked versions of current apps already in existence?
While ringbacks have been a big deal in Asia, they're still a relatively small market in the US. But, that's not going to stop collections societies from demanding cash, of course. mike allen alerts us to the news that BMI has sued T-Mobile over its ringback tones. Of course, here's the thing: a court has already established that ringtones are not performances, so are ringback tones performances? Or, of course, T-Mobile could just ban the use of any BMI songs as ringbacks, and then see how those artists feel about how BMI is "protecting" their interests...
Many of them were expected but some we were kind of prepared for. However, nothing could have prepared me for the news this morning that Brittany Murphy has passed away at only 32 years old.
My wife and I love Brittany Murphy and she is probably one of our favorite, if not our favorite actress. Responding to all that talk with a healthy dose of skepticism, scientists at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration have launched a Web page to dispel the myths surrounding the momentous occasion.

"Impressive movie special effects aside, December 21, 2012, won't be the end of the world as we know," NASA scientists wrote on its 2012 page. "It will, however, be another winter solstice."

According to NASA scientists, "nothing bad will happen to the Earth in 2012." The scientists wrote on the page that "our planet has been getting along just fine for more than 4 billion years, and credible scientists worldwide know of no threat associated with 2012."

But it's further down on the page where the scientists bring out the big guns. They said although the myth surrounding 2012 contends planets will align and crash into Earth, "there are no planetary alignments in the next few decades, Earth will not cross the galactic plane in 2012, and even if these alignments were to occur, their effects on the Earth would be negligible. Each December the Earth and sun align with the approximate center of the Milky Way galaxy but that is an annual event of no consequence."
Now, I for one love a good book or movie as much as the next guy. But the stuff flying around through cyberspace, TV, and the movies is not based on science."
If you're unfamiliar with the meme, it's mocking a favorite tactic of various cable news talk show hosts, to "ask questions" that are accusatory in nature, whether or not there's any substance to back them up. Glenn Beck didn't accuse the site of defamation or anything, but filed a domain name complaint, saying that it violated his trademark. As we noted at the time, the trademark claim was really questionable -- and, of course, only served to draw more attention to the site and the internet meme.

It's quite amusing. Randazza takes the old "moron in a hurry" test up one level, using the "abject imbecile" test. And then there was this:

We are not here because the domain name could cause confusion. We do not have a declaration from the president of the international association of imbeciles that his members are blankly staring at the Respondent's website wondering "where did all the race baiting content go?" We are here because Mr. Beck wants Respondent's website shut down. He wants it shut down because Respondent's website makes a poignant and accurate satirical critique of Mr. Beck by parodying Beck's very rhetorical style. Beck's skin is too thin to take the criticism, so he wants the site down.
Apparently, Randazza's letter worked wonders. The WIPO Arbitration Panel has rejected the attempt to take the domain, saying that it was a legitimate use of Beck's name:
In the present context, this Panel considers that if Internet users view the disputed domain name in combination with a visit to Respondent's website, the "total effect" is that of political commentary by Respondent, capable of protection as political speech by the First Amendment under the Hustler Magazine standard. Respondent appears to the Panel to be engaged in a parody of the style or methodology that Respondent appears genuinely to believe is employed by Complainant in the provision of political commentary, and for that reason Respondent can be said to be making a political statement. This constitutes a legitimate non-commercial use of Complainant's mark under the Policy.
Either way, now that the site's owner has prevailed, he apparently feels he has made his point, and has agreed to voluntarily hand over the domain (pdf), along with an explanation in the First Amendment and how not to respond to internet memes:
It bears observing that by bringing the WIPO complaint, you took what was merely one small critique meme, in a sea of internet memes, and turned it into a super-meme. Then, in pressing forward (by not withdrawing the complaint and instead filing additional briefs), you turned the super-meme into an object lesson in First Amendment principles.

It also bears noting, in this matter and for the future, that you are entirely in control of whether or not you are the subject of this particular kind of criticism. I chose to criticize you using the well-tested method of satire because of its effectiveness. But, humor aside, your rhetorical style is no laughing matter. In this context of this WIPO case, you denigrated the letter of First Amendment law. In the context of your television show and your notoriety, you routinely and shamelessly denigrate the spirit of the First Amendment....

Although the site is Dead as mentioned above, it is still available through the magic of Google Cache: So here's a link: http://74.125.155.132/search?q=cache:http://glennbeckrapedandmurderedayounggirlin1990.com/

Bradley Nowell, I'm sure, was the main portion of the band including coming up with many of the songs and probably the name. (He did have it tattooed on his back...as do 1000's of other people now, meh.)
But I remember in 1996 when he passed and I thought that it was all of his friends trying to get him clean and cared about him before his ultimate demise.
His Estate and his relatives do have every right to do it but something that troubles me is that they had to get a 'court injunction?' Like the former 'Sublime' members are that desperate for the name that Bradley's Family[Estate] had to file an injunction. That's just ugly. They're the benefactors and relatives of their friend and singer who passed away 13 freakin' years ago so why couldn't the family have just been like, 'No you cant do it' and the Long Beach Dub Allstars, being Bradley's 'friends,' should have been like, 'ok, it's cool. We'll go by 'Bum-Time' or 'Lunch-Crime' or maybe LONG BEACH DUB ALLSTARS like they have been for the last decade?
This article is good as it gets the point across, no real gossip or BS and Yahoo! News obviously got it off of the AP Wire so my review isn't really about the article and the article itself doesn't say that the remaining members will NOT get to use the name with their new singer, Rome Ramirez, just that they will have to pay for it.
My biggest beef, however, is that THERE WAS A FREAKING Cypress Hill Smokeout Festival in Southern California on October 24th and I DID NOT KNOW ABOUT IT?!
Capital WHISKEY TANGO FOXTROT, man! I only live like a days drive from there and I could have been puffing with Effing 'Insane in the Membrane?' I'm livid! The last, and ONLY time I got to see Sublime live was during Warp tour in the '90s and I didn't get to chill with Cypress Hill and NOW I'm reading about a Smokeout Festival that happened 11 days ago. I mean, 'HELLO, Associated Press!' This is News, not 'rocket science!'
(That's when we launch a projectile that crashes into the moon.)
Why do we have the internets, the Twitters, the Diggables, the Skipes, MeSpaces and yes even the StumbleUpon if I can't find out about a Cypress Hill Smokeout Festival in Southern California until eleven days after the fact although I could drive there in 23 hours. Less than one day.
Well, I'm glad that Bradley Knowle's Estate feels vindicated, I'm sure the Long Beach Dub Allstars are going to (or have? 11 days ago!) rock like it's 2009 but I will be here sober on my unemployed ass learning how to use StumbleUpon, NOT hanging at the Cypress Hill Smokeout Festival in Southern California and bitching about it. Thank you for reading.
I'm Matthew Krum and I'm not Canadian...but I play one on YouTube.
The training there was to last six months and while in training, they have a strict 'no absence or tardy' policy. I agreed to this policy thinking I could make it. Heck, I needed the money and I really liked the job. But, as fate would have it, I slept through my alarm this morning and I was an hour late to work. So they canned me and I am now unemployed once again. Yay! So our home will remain on Blogger.com for the time being and I will again be writing articles about Ubuntu and Android as well as re-posting any Linux/Android/Mobile Device News. This is in no way due to Blogger.com or Google...it's just time for a change. Also, I'm paid up for two years of hosting at another provider so I figure I might as well use it!
I haven't used Blogger for even a year but they are a great tool and I love the ability to integrate third party apps/widgets as well as the ease of using Google Ad-Sense.
In moving, however, I will be able to add the forums I wanted to easier as well as update the blog more often. So, a HUGE thank you to Blogger and Google for having me and I of course will always retain my account over at http://www.YouTube.com/Krum303

The move will take approximately two weeks and the domain won't be changing. So mark your calendars for the 14th of September and we will see you then with a new look and more content.

As a final thought, here's the most popular video on my YouTube Channel:

Cheers,

Matt
Matthew Krumhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10738127075510322646noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4518336198145997386.post-19962592467822076022009-08-31T08:18:00.000-07:002009-08-31T08:26:34.009-07:00Skype Revisited Ubuntu 9.04If you use Linux in conjunction with Skype at all, you probably have said many expletives, beat up your PC or even woke up in cold sweats from nightmares.
I'm exagerating of course but it can be a pain just to get it to work. Audio out works but voice in doesn't; calls drop; your CPU starts to sound like an oldskool RAID drive or....an Apache Helicoptor. Well, over at ctsdownloads on YouTube they Matt Hartley has posted two great videos for beginner and Guru alike. Rather than go into the details and steal their thunder, I've embedded the videos below. So if you're a Skype fan and you use the latest version of Ubuntu, (or Xubuntu like myself.) then check 'em out and give them some five star love! ;-)

Cheers,

~Matthew

Matthew Krumhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10738127075510322646noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4518336198145997386.post-42764050582042233852009-08-12T10:21:00.000-07:002009-08-12T10:35:54.923-07:00Injunction Blocks Microsoft From Selling WordIt's my Dad's birthday and what a gift he's going to get, [he hates Microsoft] when he hears that Judge Leonard Davis of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas has declared that Microsoft cannot sell a product called Microsoft Word. [via PC World]
Apparently, MS Word violates a Toronto Company's Patent on reading XML. i4i.com

I was always curious about how M$ got away with locking down their DOCX format from being edited by other software since it uses XML which is open to everyone.

For example, OpenOffice.org is able to open the DOCX format but once you edit it, you must save it in a different format. Microsoft apparently has 60 days to complie so that explains why MS Word is still for sale on their website. I personally recommend OpenOffice.org as an alternative for any of you that are/were looking to purchase Word after the next sixty days. It's free, smaller footprint, open source and runs on multiple platforms. It can do pretty much everything that Word and MS Office can do and, oh yeah, did I mention it's free?

So, does anyone have other alternatives to Word that they use, free or not? Leave a comment and let our readers know what options are out there!

Matthew Krumhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10738127075510322646noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4518336198145997386.post-60591683677878337362009-08-11T20:20:00.000-07:002009-08-11T20:31:18.886-07:00Miss the Old Movie Maker?
